IP Address

IP (Internet Protocol) address is an address you use to send requests and get responses on the Internet. An IP address is influenced by your Internet provider and the device you are using. When you change devices and stay within the same router, your IP changes. When you go to the cafe with the same device, your IP is different as well.

IP addresses are used as a mailing system and create connections with other devices. If you want your mail delivered to the right address, the receiving person has to have the exact IP. If you want to get an answer from it, you have to give your right address too. It is all done automatically by the machines though and many users have no idea about IP addresses and how networking between millions of devices around the world works.

There are private and public IP addresses. Private IP addresses connect only a very limited number of computers. Common users who use the Internet usually have a public IP.

Two versions of IP addresses are IPv4 and IPv6. The first version is an older one. It can have only 4 billion IP addresses. Since every user has more than one device, it has become not enough at one point. Therefore, IPv6 was introduced which offers trillions of IP addresses.
