Resolution

Resolution is a metric used to describe the display capabilities of a computer or mobile device. Every screen has a specific resolution, meaning the number of pixels it can display. For example, an HD display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, where the first number indicates the width and the second one – height. With a 4K display, users get as much as two HD resolutions or 3840 x 2160 pixels. If a display supports a maximum resolution of 1280 x 1023 pixels, it may support 1024 x 768, 800 x 600, and 640 x 480 resolutions as well.

It also indicated the clarity of an image or picture. The resolution is the number of pixels the image contains, and a high-quality picture has higher resolution and more pixels. Image resolution types:

  • Spatial resolution: this technique is used to differentiate two relatively similar images.
  • Spectral resolution: it is used for spectral features resolving into separate elements.
  • Temporal resolution: here we mean the precision of a measurement with respect to time. For example, a camera can resolve from 24 to 300 frames per second depending on its speed.
  • Radiometric resolution: it is applied for computer image files identifying their intensity in bits.
